How to Apply

To apply for the Communication Sciences and Disorders PhD, you should have an undergraduate degree in communication disorders, education, linguistics or psychology and should demonstrate previous coursework in statistics and probability.  

We recommend that students contact faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders to discuss their areas of interest and opportunities for mentored research before applying to the program.

Application

Students must apply through the SOPHAS Centralized Application ServiceThe documents listed below will all be submitted through SOPHAS.

Check on your application status and the receipt of your materials through the SOPHAS portal.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation from college or university professors who can speak to your academic abilities. If you’ve been out of school for more than five years, submit letters from professional colleagues who can discuss your relevant academic skills including critical thinking, research, and writing.

Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from all the undergraduate and graduate institutions you’ve attended to:

Statement of Goals

Write a 500- to 1,000-word statement of purpose that articulates your interests in public health and this program in particular. Craft your statement to address the following items specifically:

  1. Why are you pursuing this MPH program and what are your particular areas of interest in public health?

  2. How does the Epidemiology MPH program within Temple’s Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics best fit your public health interests?

  3. What are your career goals and how will this degree help you achieve these goals?

  4. What are your plans in the first few years after graduation?

Writing Sample

Submit a paper or excerpt that explores an academic topic in some depth, e.g., a thesis chapter, senior or master’s level research paper, or conference paper.

Résumé

A current résumé or CV is required.

Laptop Requirement

Laptops are integrated into the curriculum at the Barnett College of Public Health to improve opportunities for active learning and provide greater access to specialized software and required tools in and out of the classroom. Incoming students are required to have a laptop that meets certain minimum hardware specifications. Review full laptop requirements.

Additional Requirements for International Students

  • For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL is required with a minimum score of 79 or 4.5 on the iBT. These scores should be sent officially to SOPHAS using the SOPHAS-specific TOEFL code of 5688.
  • WES Evaluation is required for applicants who completed their degree outside of the United States. This can be requested and submitted through SOPHAS.

Application Deadline

  • Fall Priority: Dec. 15

This deadline enables students to be nominated for fellowships. Applications must be submitted AND complete (i.e., all required materials must be received and verified by SOPHAS) by Dec. 15 to be considered.
